Rapls PDF Image Creator Pro Manual

Pro 1.1.0 | Free Rapls PDF Image Creator 1.4.39+ | PHP 7.4+ | WordPress 5.8+

Rapls PDF Image Creator Pro is an add-on for the free Rapls PDF Image Creator. To the thumbnails the free plugin makes, it adds cropping, a page choice per PDF, a queue that keeps going after you close the tab, and replacement detection with a screen for replacing a PDF. On a server that meets two conditions, it can also render PDFs the free plugin cannot, by calling Ghostscript directly.

Resolution, format, quality and the site-wide page number stay on the free plugin’s own settings screen. For those, see the free plugin manual.

Installing it changes nothing. Cropping defaults to “Off”, and direct rendering and automatic remaking are off too. Changing a setting leaves existing thumbnails alone; only thumbnails made after the change use it.

01Getting started

Requirements

ItemRequirement
Free Rapls PDF Image Creator1.4.39 or later, installed and active (required)
PHP7.4 or later
WordPress5.8 or later
PHP Imagick extensionRequired. Even with direct rendering, Imagick finishes the image (colour conversion, resizing)
Outbound HTTPSUsed to activate the licence and check for updates
Direct rendering onlyPHP must be allowed to start programs, and Ghostscript must be installed (details)
If the free plugin is missing or too old Pro switches every feature off and says why in the admin — for example, “Every Pro feature is switched off because “Rapls PDF Image Creator” is not installed or not active.” Your site keeps running. Activate or update the free plugin first. The settings screen still opens in this state.

Installation

  1. Install and activate the free Rapls PDF Image Creator (1.4.39 or later) from WordPress.org.
  2. Buy Pro on the product page. Your licence key arrives by email.
  3. On the download page, enter the email address you bought with and your licence key to get rapls-pdf-image-creator-pro.zip.
  4. Go to Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin, upload the ZIP and activate it.

Activating the licence

Licence keys look like RPIC-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX.

  1. Open Settings → PDF Image Creator Pro → Licence tab.
  2. Enter the address you bought with in E-mail and your key in Licence key.
  3. Press Activate licence. When it shows “● Licence active” with your email, the masked key and the type (“1 site” or “5 sites”), you’re done.
Settings → PDF Image Creator Pro → Licence tab: licence active, e-mail, the masked licence key and the type
Until the licence is active The Pro features stay off, and the free plugin behaves exactly as it does without Pro. The crop settings screen and its preview stay open, so you can try them on your own files before buying. The “Thumbnail page” and “Cropping” fields also appear on a PDF’s edit screen, but they only take effect once the licence is active.
If the licence server can’t be reached After activation the licence is rechecked once a day. A network failure never invalidates it: it keeps working for 14 days after the last successful check, and stops after that if the server still can’t be reached. If the server answers that the licence is invalid (revoked), Pro stops straight away.

Messages you may see when activating:

MessageMeaning and what to do
Enter both the e-mail address and the licence key.One of the fields is empty.
Could not reach the licence server. The server can’t make outbound HTTPS requests. Check your host’s firewall or WAF.
The licence server sent a reply this site could not read (HTTP number), so your key has not been checked. A firewall or proxy in between is the usual cause. If this keeps happening, contact support.Something between this site and the licence server answered in its place. If it goes on after a while, contact support with the number shown.
Activation failed. (or the server’s own reason)The email and key don’t match, the site limit is reached, or the licence was revoked.

Deactivating and moving sites

A 1-site licence activates on one site, a 5-site licence on up to five. To move to another site, press Deactivate licence on the old site (it asks you to confirm), then activate on the new one. Deactivating frees the slot on the server and removes the key and email from this site.

If the old site is gone or can’t be opened, or a slot stayed taken, write to info@raplsworks.com with the licence key and the old site’s address. This is done at any time, even after the first year of email support. The licence is issued again with a new key, sent by email, and the old key stops working (other sites on the same licence stop at their next daily check until they get the new key). If you only lost your key, the same key is sent to you again.

Trying it on staging A staging or development copy, or a site on localhost, counts as a site and uses a slot. A copy of a licensed site does not take the licence with it. The steps are the same. If you’re out of slots, deactivate on production, try it on staging, then activate on production again.

02Cropping

Set under “What to crop” and “Fine tuning” on Settings → PDF Image Creator Pro.

Why crop at all WordPress cuts its small 150×150 thumbnail as a square from the middle of the image. On a portrait A4 page the top — where the title is — is gone at that point, and no CSS brings it back. “Take the top of the page” cuts a square from the top before WordPress gets the image, so the top survives.

What to crop

OptionWhat it does
Off defaultThumbnails are made exactly as the free plugin makes them. Activating Pro doesn’t change how your library looks.
Take the top of the page — recommendedCuts a square (or the shape set in “Shape of the top crop”) from the top of the page. Works the same on full-bleed covers with no margin. A square image is cropped to the whole square.
Remove the marginsTrims the blank border so the content fills more of the thumbnail. Good on a white page with the content in the middle. On a full-bleed design there’s no margin to remove and the result is unpredictable — on a cover with coloured bands top and bottom it cut both bands off. On a scanned page, “Tolerance” has to match the speckle in the paper.
Remove the margins, then take the topBoth, in that order. Sensible on a text document with wide margins and a heading at the top. It carries the same caution as “Remove the margins”: try it on a few files before using it widely.

Fine tuning

SettingDefaultWhat it does
Tolerance8% (0–30)How different a pixel has to be from the page background before it counts as content. Only used when margins are being removed.
• 0–8% — clean pages, and pages with a faint speck or two.
• 12–21% — avoid. In this range the crop takes part of the page and stops somewhere arbitrary. A page that wasn’t cropped is obvious at a glance; a page that was half cropped looks like it worked.
• Above 21% — what a JPEG-compressed scan needs. Check a few files before applying it widely.
Smallest allowed result5% (0–100)If cropping leaves less than this much of the page, the crop is thrown away and the whole page is used (the safety valve). It catches blank pages and crops that latched onto a speck of dust.
It does not catch a half-crop: those come out larger than a correct crop. Tolerance is what guards against those.
Breathing room2% (0–50)Puts a little margin back after cropping so the content isn’t pressed against the edge.
Shape of the top cropSquare (1:1)“Square (1:1) — recommended”, “Landscape (4:3)”, “Wide (16:9)”, “Portrait (3:4)”. Square is the only common shape that survives WordPress’s centre crop, and it makes the finished image bigger — an A4 page comes out 1024×1024 instead of 724×1024. Portrait (3:4) is still taller than wide, so WordPress goes on cutting the middle out of it.
Even out the shapesLeave as it comes out“Leave as it comes out”, “Pad to square (1:1)”, “Pad to 4:3”, “Pad to 3:4”. Removing margins leaves every PDF a slightly different shape, which makes a grid look ragged; this pads the result to one shape with the background colour.
Where the defaults come from They were checked against ten real, digitally produced PDFs. Scanned paper hasn’t been tested, so for scans, check the preview first.

Saving shows “Saved. Existing thumbnails are left alone — regenerate the ones you want changed.” Regenerate through the queue or the free plugin’s Bulk Generate tab.

Preview on your own file

  1. Under “See it on one of your own files”, pick a PDF from — choose a PDF — (the 20 most recent).
  2. Press Render both. Using the settings currently on the screen — including values you haven’t saved — it shows “Without cropping” and “With these settings” side by side.
  3. Under the second picture you get the finished size, how much of the page it is, and, if the crop wasn’t applied, why.
"See it on one of your own files": pick a PDF, press Render both, and the current thumbnail appears next to the result of these settings
Watch the numbers, not just the picture A crop that took part of the page and stopped comes out larger than one that worked. The eye misses it; the numbers don’t. The preview saves nothing and replaces no thumbnail.

03Per-PDF settings

Open a PDF in the Media Library and its edit screen gets these fields. Left empty, or on “Use the site setting”, the site-wide setting applies.

FieldWhat it does
Thumbnail pageUse a different page for this PDF. Counting starts at 1. Leave it empty to follow the setting for the whole library (the page number on the free plugin’s screen). When the page count is known you’ll see “N pages in this file.” and a larger number won’t save.
On a server that won’t report the page count, any number is accepted. If the page doesn’t exist, the thumbnail fails and says so rather than quietly falling back to page one.
Cropping“Use the site setting (…)” or one of the four modes. For a drawing that must not be cropped, or a cover that only works when the top is used. Changing it doesn’t touch the existing thumbnail; regenerate the file to see it.
This PDFOnly shown when something is wrong: “The PDF has been replaced since this thumbnail was made.” or “No thumbnail can be made for this PDF as it stands.”
Last generatedDate and time, the renderer (“rendered by …”), the finished size, and “not cropped: (reason)” if the crop didn’t happen.

04Direct rendering (Ghostscript)

When a server’s ImageMagick refuses to open PDFs — usually a security policy the host set, sometimes a missing component — the free plugin has no way round it, because the WordPress.org rules it’s published under don’t let it start other programs. Pro isn’t published under those rules, so it can call Ghostscript directly to draw the page and hand the result back to the free plugin to finish.

On a server that already works, this changes nothing. The normal path (the free plugin) is always tried first, and when it succeeds nothing else runs — no extra program, and the same image down to the byte. Direct rendering is used only when the normal path fails.

Requirements

ConditionHow Pro checks
PHP can start programsEither exec or proc_open is not in disable_functions (one of the two is enough), and running a harmless command actually returns output. Pro runs it for real rather than asking whether the function name exists
Ghostscript (gs) is installedFound on PATH or in a usual place such as /usr/bin/gs
The PHP Imagick extension is availableUsed to finish the image. With no Imagick at all, direct rendering can’t work either

The verdict and its breakdown are under “When this server cannot draw a PDF at all” → “This server” on the settings screen.

VerdictMeaning
Ghostscript can be called directly on this server.Available. The gs path and version are shown.
This server does not let PHP start other programs (neither exec nor proc_open works), so the alternative renderer cannot be used. Not available. Some hosts let you change this yourself — a control-panel checkbox or a php.ini — but it was disabled for safety, so understand what you’re turning on first. Everything else in Pro works without it.
Ghostscript was not found on this server.PHP can start programs, but there’s no Ghostscript to start. Your host would have to install it.

The breakdown lists “Starting programs:”, “Ghostscript:” and “Time limit on the renderer:” (yes (this plugin enforces it) / yes (the timeout command) / none — a stuck render cannot be stopped). These answers are remembered for twelve hours; after your host changes something, press Check this server again.

Turning it on

Under “Use it”, tick Fall back to calling Ghostscript directly when the normal path fails and save. It’s off by default, and the box can’t be ticked unless the verdict says it’s available. Turn it on if thumbnails are failing and the free plugin’s Status tab says PDF rendering is blocked or unavailable.

  • Once on, the free plugin’s Status tab adds “Thumbnails are being produced by calling Ghostscript directly instead.” and its requirements list gains a “Direct rendering (Pro)” row.
  • The queue’s Details column says which renderer drew each thumbnail: “Rendered by calling Ghostscript directly.” or “Rendered by the free plugin.”
  • It automatically works around Ghostscript 9.27 and earlier returning pages that use transparency as blank white.

05Refusing oversized pages

Rendering a large page such as A0 at a high resolution can exhaust memory and take the PHP process down with it — no exception, no failure record. While the licence is active, Pro estimates the pixel count from the page size and resolution before drawing, and refuses pages over the limit.

  • The limit is the smallest of: 40% of ImageMagick’s area limit, its width and height limits, and 100 megapixels. A4 at 600 dpi and A0 at 150 dpi (about 35 MP) pass; A0 at 300 dpi (about 139 MP) is refused.
  • A refused job shows “The page is too large to render at this resolution.” in the queue. Lower the resolution in the free plugin and queue it again.
  • There’s no setting for it. If you need a different ceiling, use the rapls_pdfp_max_megapixels filter (in MP; 0 or less removes this ceiling, leaving ImageMagick’s own limits).
// Example: raise the ceiling to 150 MP (a theme's functions.php, for instance)
add_filter('rapls_pdfp_max_megapixels', function () { return 150; });

Measured on Xserver: an A0 page at 600 dpi refused in 0.004 s, where it used to render for 68.5 s.

06The queue

Media → PDF Queue (titled “PDF Thumbnail Queue”). Queued PDFs are processed in the background, and you can close the page. While the page is open it also processes from there and refreshes the counts every few seconds.

Media → PDF Queue: buttons above, jobs below; a failed job shows its reason and what to do

Buttons

ButtonWhat it does
Queue N PDFs without a thumbnailQueues only PDFs that have no thumbnail yet. Asks to confirm.
Queue N replaced PDFsQueues PDFs whose file changed after the thumbnail was made, and remakes them. Asks to confirm.
Regenerate all N PDFsRemakes every PDF’s thumbnail with the current settings, replacing the existing ones. Asks to confirm.
Retry N failed jobsPuts “Will retry” and “Failed” jobs back in line.
Remove finished jobs from the listRemoves “Done” jobs from the list. Thumbnails are not deleted.

With more PDFs than one request can queue, you’ll see “There were more PDFs than one request could queue. Carry on from where it stopped:” — press Queue the rest. The result reads “Queued N. Queued again: N. Already waiting: N.” Nothing already queued, or already made with the same settings, is queued twice.

Media Library bulk actions

In Media → Library list view, tick PDFs and choose from “Bulk actions”:

  • Queue PDF thumbnails — makes thumbnails for those without one.
  • Regenerate PDF thumbnails (queue) — remakes them, replacing existing thumbnails. The list marks these “replaces the existing thumbnail”.

Statuses and retries

StatusMeaning
WaitingIn line.
RunningBeing processed. A job still running after 15 minutes is treated as stuck and put back.
Will retryFailed; tried again automatically about five minutes later (“next try in …”).
FailedFailed three times, or failed in a way a retry can’t fix. The Details column says why and what to do. Use the row’s Retry to try one again.
DoneFinished. Removed from the list automatically after 30 days.

Common reasons in the Details column:

MessageWhat to do
ImageMagick on this server is not allowed to read PDFs.A security policy on the server. If the Pro settings say Ghostscript can be called directly, turn direct rendering on and retry the jobs.
ImageMagick on this server cannot read PDFs.Usually Ghostscript isn’t where ImageMagick looks for it. Same fix as above.
The Imagick PHP extension is not available on this server.Ask your host to enable it. Direct rendering needs it too.
The page is too large to render at this resolution.Lower the resolution in the free plugin and queue it again.
The chosen page is not in this PDF.Usually the PDF was replaced with a shorter one. Pick a page it has on the PDF’s edit screen, then queue it again.
The job stopped without finishing.A time limit or crash on the server. Retried automatically.
Generating this thumbnail raised an error.Retried automatically. If it keeps happening, send the “Technical details” to support.
The PDF is no longer in the Media Library.Nothing to do.

Server cron (for quiet sites)

In the background the queue runs on WP-Cron, which only wakes when someone visits the site. On a quiet site that can mean hours. For a steady pace, have the server’s cron call wp-cron.php every five minutes.

*/5 * * * * curl -s https://example.com/wp-cron.php?doing_wp_cron > /dev/null 2>&1
Not every minute Shared hosts warn against every-minute cron jobs and may stop a worker that keeps the processor busy (Xserver shows a warning for one). Each run stops starting new jobs after at most 20 seconds, so every five minutes keeps things moving. Measured on Xserver: 500 jobs, unattended, 500 done.

07Replacement detection

A thumbnail is made from a PDF at one moment. If the PDF is replaced later, the thumbnail still shows the old one. Pro watches for that and says so. Watching is always on — it compares file size, time and hash, and changes no image.

What it notices, and what it can’t

How the PDF was replacedNoticed?
A replace plugin, keeping the file nameYes (immediately)
A replace plugin, with a new file nameYes (immediately)
Overwritten over FTP or SFTPYes (on the daily check, or use the button below)
A new PDF uploaded and the old one deletedNo — that is a different file, and nothing links it to the old one
“Replace this PDF”, on the PDF’s own screenNothing to notice — the thumbnail is made again as part of replacing it

Tested with Enable Media Replace 4.2.2, both keeping the file name and renaming it.

The daily check Once a day the library is checked a slice at a time (200 PDFs looked at and at most 20 files read per run), carrying on five minutes later until it’s done. “Right now” under “Replaced PDFs” on the settings screen shows “Every PDF was last checked … ago.” Press Check every PDF now to start again from the beginning.

Badges and counts

  • In Media → Library list view, the “PDF thumbnail” column shows “PDF replaced” (“The thumbnail is of the previous file.”) on replaced PDFs and “Cannot be made” on PDFs that can’t be rendered. A PDF that’s fine shows nothing.
  • “Right now” on the settings screen reads “N replaced, N that cannot be made.” with a Queue them for a new thumbnail link when there are replaced PDFs.
  • The “This PDF” field on the edit screen says the same.
Media Library list view: the PDF thumbnail column with the PDF replaced and Cannot be made badges

Remaking automatically

Under “When one is replaced”, ticking Queue a new thumbnail automatically queues each replaced PDF as it’s found. It’s off by default, because it replaces images without being asked. Left off, replaced PDFs are listed and you decide when to remake them (the queue’s “Queue N replaced PDFs”).

08Replacing a PDF

A PDF’s edit screen has a “Replace this PDF” box on the right. It’s deliberately not a row action next to Delete in the Media Library list, where it would be easy to click on the wrong file.

Replacing

  1. Open the PDF in the Media Library. “Now” in the box shows the current file name, size and page count.
  2. Choose the new PDF.
  3. Check Keep the current file name (ticked by default).
  4. Press Replace.

Everything that points at this PDF — posts, links, the Media Library entry — keeps pointing at it (the attachment ID doesn’t change). The thumbnail is remade on the spot, and the old thumbnail image isn’t left behind.

ResultMeaning
Replaced, and a new thumbnail made. The file name and the URL are unchanged. You kept the file name.
Replaced, and a new thumbnail made. The file has a new name, so its URL has changed. You didn’t keep the file name.
The PDF was replaced, but the page this file is set to use is not in the new one, so no thumbnail was made. Choose a page it has.Fix “Thumbnail page” to a page the new PDF has.
The PDF was replaced, but the thumbnail could not be made. The Status tab says why.Check the free plugin’s Status tab.
Only a PDF can replace a PDF. …The file doesn’t end in .pdf, or is named .pdf but isn’t one. Nothing was changed.
No file arrived. It may have been larger than this server accepts.Check PHP’s upload limits (upload_max_filesize / post_max_size).
If you keep the name, the URL stays the same — mind CDN and browser caches A CDN or a browser that already has that URL may go on handing out the old PDF until its copy expires. Clear the CDN cache afterwards if you use one. Giving the file a new name avoids this and changes the URL instead.

Undoing

When a previous file is kept, the box shows “The previous file is kept: name, replaced … ago.” and Put the previous file back. Pressing it asks to confirm, restores the previous file and remakes its thumbnail (“The previous PDF is back under its old name, with a new thumbnail made from it.”).

With keeping set to “none”, the box says “Keeping a copy of the replaced file is switched off in the settings, so a replacement cannot be undone here.”

Kept files and Nginx

Under “Replaced PDFs” → “Replacing one yourself” on the settings screen, Keep this many previous files, so a replacement can be undone: takes none / 1 / 2 / 3 (default 1).

  • Kept files go into a folder with an unguessable name under uploads (rapls-pdfp-backups- followed by random characters).
  • On Apache, an .htaccess in that folder refuses every request.
  • Deleting a PDF from the Media Library deletes its kept files too.
If you see “This server does not look like Apache.” Nginx and similar servers don’t read .htaccess, so what keeps the kept files private there is the folder’s unguessable name alone. If your PDFs are confidential, add a server rule denying that folder (its name is shown on the screen), or keep none.
# Nginx example (use the folder name shown on the settings screen)
location ^~ /wp-content/uploads/rapls-pdfp-backups-xxxxxxxxxxxx/ { deny all; }

09Updates

Pro updates come from the Rapls Works update server, not WordPress.org, and arrive in WordPress’s usual update screens. They need an active licence (updates have no time limit; email support from a person is included for a year from purchase, and updates carry on after that).

  • Pro’s row on the Plugins screen gets View details and Check for updates. Checking reports “Version N is available. …”, “You have the latest version (N).”, “Updates cannot be checked because the licence is not active.”, or “The update server could not be reached, or did not accept the licence. …” When the last of these appears with an update still offered below it, that offer is the one the server made when it was last reached.
  • The licence key never goes in a URL; it’s sent in request headers.
  • The ZIP is only accepted over HTTPS, and its size and SHA-256 are checked before installing. If they don’t match you’ll see “The update package failed its integrity check, so it was not installed.” and nothing is replaced.
  • Updates still arrive when Pro is switched off because the free plugin is too old — so an update can deliver the fix.

10Uninstalling

Deactivating and deleting Pro on the Plugins screen removes:

WhatDetails
SettingsPro’s settings, its version record, the remembered server check
LicenceKey, email and status (so no credential is left in the database), and the daily recheck
QueueThe jobs table ({prefix}rapls_pdfp_jobs) and its schedules
Replacement detectionThe check’s progress and schedules, and per-PDF records (page, cropping, fingerprint, last render, kept-file records — the _rapls_pdfp_ meta)
FilesThe scratch folder uploads/rapls-pdfp-tmp and the kept-files folder
Thumbnail images are never deleted. Generated images belong to the free plugin, are Media Library items in their own right, and are very likely in use in posts. What happens to them is the free plugin’s uninstall setting. Deactivating alone removes nothing.

Because the kept-files folder is removed, previous PDFs kept for undoing can’t be restored after uninstalling. Put one back first if you need it.

11Troubleshooting

I installed Pro and nothing changed

  • Cropping defaults to “Off”. Choose a mode on Settings → PDF Image Creator Pro.
  • Existing thumbnails aren’t touched by a settings change. Regenerate with the queue’s “Regenerate all N PDFs”, or select PDFs and use “Regenerate PDF thumbnails (queue)”.
  • Check that Settings → PDF Image Creator Pro → Licence tab shows “Licence active”.
  • Look for a red notice about the free plugin at the top of the admin.

“Free plugin is missing the extension point”

The free plugin reports a new enough version, but the filter Pro attaches to (rapls_pdf_image_creator_before_resize) isn’t in its code. Reinstall the free plugin from a clean copy. If that doesn’t fix it, contact support and mention that filter name.

The queue isn’t moving

  • On a quiet site WP-Cron doesn’t wake. Set up a server cron every five minutes, or keep the queue page open.
  • If DISABLE_WP_CRON is true, a server cron is required.
  • “Will retry” jobs wait about five minutes.

Thumbnails come out blank

Check the free plugin’s Status tab. For the Ghostscript 9.27-and-earlier transparency bug, both the free plugin and direct rendering apply a workaround. If removing margins gives odd results on a scanned PDF, check Tolerance (avoid 12–21%).

The crop seems to stop partway

Tolerance is most likely in the 12–21% band. Compare the finished sizes in the preview, and move it to 8% or below, or above 21%. To leave one PDF uncropped, set “Cropping” to “Off” on its edit screen.

I replaced a PDF and the old one still downloads

Keeping the file name keeps the URL, so a CDN or browser cache may still return the old PDF. Clear the CDN cache or reload in the browser.

I uploaded a new PDF and there’s no “PDF replaced” badge

Uploading a new PDF and deleting the old one creates a different file, which can’t be detected; the new PDF just gets its own thumbnail. An FTP overwrite shows up on the daily check or with “Check every PDF now”.

The direct rendering checkbox can’t be ticked

“This server” doesn’t say it’s available. Read the reason shown, and after your host changes something press Check this server again.

12FAQ

The free plugin says this server can’t render PDFs. Will Pro?

It depends on the server. If PHP can start programs and Ghostscript is installed, yes. If either is missing, Pro can’t render either. Pro’s settings screen shows the verdict for your server. If it doesn’t qualify, you get a full refund within 14 days of purchase.

Is it a subscription? Does it stop after a year?

It’s a one-time purchase. Updates have no time limit and keep coming after the first year. Email support from a person (info@raplsworks.com) is included for a year from purchase; the add-on and its updates carry on after that.

What happens if the licence server goes down?

Nothing happens to your site. It keeps working for 14 days after the last successful check. And without a valid licence none of Pro’s features run, and thumbnails are made exactly as the free plugin makes them (the admin screens still show the licence field and a note that it is not active).

Won’t cropping cut off something important?

You can check it in the preview before saving, turn it off for individual PDFs, and a crop that leaves too little falls back to the whole page through the safety valve. “Take the top of the page” uses the whole square on an image that is already square.

Does it work with Enable Media Replace?

Yes. With Enable Media Replace 4.2.2, replacements that keep the file name and ones that rename it were both tested; Pro noticed each immediately and remade the thumbnail correctly. They also sit in different places — Enable Media Replace in the list, Pro on the PDF’s edit screen.

Can editors and authors use it?

Settings, the queue and the licence are for administrators only. Per-PDF settings and replacing are available to anyone who can edit that PDF.
