1. About This Plugin

Rapls PDF Image Creator (the free plugin) generates thumbnail images from PDFs uploaded to the WordPress Media Library.
Rapls PDF Image Creator Pro (the paid add-on; together with the free plugin, “the Plugin”) adds cropped thumbnails, a page chosen per PDF, replacement detection with a replace screen, a background queue, and — where the server allows it — calling Ghostscript directly.

Pro does not work on its own. The free plugin, version 1.4.39 or later, must be installed and active. Without it every Pro feature stays off and a notice in the admin says so.
Sections marked “(Pro)” apply to Pro only. Please read the following disclaimer carefully before using the Plugin.

2. Thumbnail Generation

Thumbnail generation depends on the PHP Imagick extension, ImageMagick and Ghostscript as installed on your server. Whether they are present, which versions they are, and what their security policies (such as policy.xml) allow differ from server to server and are outside our control.
We make no guarantee that a correct thumbnail can be produced for every PDF.
The contents of a PDF (transparency, unusual colour spaces, damaged or non-standard structures) or faults in the server’s own software can result in a blank image, an image with different colours, or a failure to generate one at all.

On a server where neither ImageMagick nor a direct call to Ghostscript (Pro) can render a PDF, no thumbnails can be produced (Pro’s cropping, page chosen per PDF, queue and replacement all work without the direct call on a server where ImageMagick can render). The free plugin’s Status tab tells you whether your server can generate thumbnails. Please check it before you buy Pro.

3. Calling Ghostscript Directly (Pro)

This feature works only on servers where PHP can start programs — either exec or proc_open is enough — and Ghostscript is installed. On a server that does not meet those conditions, this feature cannot be used.
Changing server settings or installing software is at the discretion of your hosting provider; we neither do this on your behalf nor guarantee that it is possible.
The feature is also off by default. When it is on, Ghostscript is run on your server as thumbnails are made (and, where Ghostscript could not draw the page, poppler’s pdftoppm may be run as a last resort). Please check your hosting agreement as to whether this is permitted on shared hosting.
The free plugin never starts a program on your server.

4. Cropping (Pro)

The cropping defaults were verified with digitally created PDFs. They were not verified with scanned paper documents.
Cropping can leave out part of the page you need. Always check the preview on the settings screen before applying it.

5. Replacing Files and Backups (Pro)

When you replace a PDF from the replace screen, the previous file is kept as a backup. How many generations are kept depends on your setting (choose “none” and no backup is kept, and the replacement cannot be undone). Backups older than the number you set are deleted and cannot be recovered.
The Plugin’s backups are not a substitute for a backup of your whole site. Please keep your own backups of important files.

Backups are kept in a hard-to-guess place inside the uploads folder, and on Apache the Plugin writes a rule that denies access to it. On servers that do not read .htaccess, such as Nginx, that rule has no effect. On such a server, please deny access to the backup folder in the server’s own configuration (the settings screen warns about this).

Replacement detection finds files that have changed — replaced by another plugin, overwritten over FTP, and so on. Some ways of replacing a PDF cannot be detected, for example uploading a new PDF and deleting the old one.
Where several attachments share one file (WPML, Polylang and other multilingual setups), replacing it affects all of them. Please read the warning on the replace screen.

6. The Queue and Scheduled Work (Pro)

The queue and the daily replacement check run through WP-Cron. WP-Cron is driven by visits to your site, so on a quiet site the work can be delayed. If you call wp-cron.php from your server’s own cron instead, please follow your hosting provider’s terms.
Processing many PDFs uses your server’s CPU, memory and disk. We take no responsibility for the load this places on shared hosting, or for any restrictions your host applies as a result.

7. Licence and Updates (Pro)

A valid licence is required to use Pro’s features and to receive its updates. A licence is tied to the sites it is activated on. A staging or development copy, or a site on localhost, counts as a site.
Checking the licence and fetching updates require communication with our licence server (raplsworks.com). The free plugin’s updates come from WordPress.org.

If the licence server cannot be reached, Pro features are not switched off immediately: they keep working for a grace period of 14 days. If the server still cannot be reached after that, the Pro features stop.
If a licence is revoked — after a refund or for any other reason — the Pro features and updates are no longer available.
Updates after purchase have no time limit. Support is provided for one year from purchase. No renewal plan is sold.
We do not guarantee the availability of the licence server, nor the provision of updates for any particular period.

8. No Warranty and Limitation of Liability

1. We make no warranty, express or implied, that the Plugin and the services provided through it are free from defects in fact or in law, including as to accuracy, completeness, effectiveness, reliability, safety, legality or fitness for a particular purpose. We also make no warranty that it is free from security flaws, errors or bugs.

2. We make no warranty in respect of the following:

  • That it will work correctly on every server and every WordPress environment
  • That it will keep working correctly when WordPress, PHP, ImageMagick, Ghostscript or other software is updated
  • That thumbnail generation, cropping and page selection will produce the intended result for every PDF
  • That it is compatible with third-party plugins and themes, in particular media-related and multilingual plugins
  • That it will operate continuously and without error under all conditions

3. We do not warrant to users that we will remedy, at our own responsibility and expense, any defect covered by the two preceding paragraphs. We accept no liability for any direct, indirect, incidental, special, punitive or consequential damages arising from use of the Plugin, including loss of files or images, faulty thumbnails or site display, and damages arising from server load.

9. Handling of Data

The Plugin stores the images it generates, its settings, its history of work and the backups of replaced files on your own server (the WordPress database and the uploads folder). It never sends your PDFs or images to our servers. The free plugin does not communicate with our servers at all.

For licence activation and update checks, Pro sends the licence key, the e-mail address and the site URL to our licence server (raplsworks.com). The address the request comes from — your site’s server, not a visitor’s — is recorded by that server, and an approximate location (country, region and city) is looked up from it through ipwho.is (only the address is sent there; the licence key and e-mail address are not). Every download — from the download page, or by the plugin’s automatic updates — also sends the e-mail address and licence key, and the download is logged.
See our Privacy Policy for details.

10. Refund Policy (Pro)

14-day money-back guarantee: Rapls PDF Image Creator Pro can be refunded in full, for any reason, within 14 days of purchase.
Please contact us by e-mail (info@raplsworks.com).
See our Refund Policy for details.

After 14 days from the date of purchase, refunds are as a rule not available, given the nature of digital goods.
If you suspect a double charge or a billing error on our part, however, please contact us regardless of how long it has been.

The free plugin is published on WordPress.org.
Before buying, we recommend checking the following with the free plugin:

  • Whether your server can generate PDF thumbnails at all (the free plugin’s Status tab tells you)
  • If it cannot, whether your server meets the conditions for calling Ghostscript directly (either exec or proc_open available, and Ghostscript installed)
  • Compatibility with your other plugins and your theme, in particular media-related and multilingual plugins
  • Whether the features you need are in Pro

11. Pricing (Pro)

The price of a Pro licence is subject to change without prior notice.
Licences purchased before a price change will be honored at the purchase price.

12. Support

Technical support is provided to licence holders for one year from purchase.
Support is limited to basic usage of the Plugin and resolution of technical issues.
Site-specific customizations, changes to server settings or software installation, and compatibility issues with third-party plugins may not be covered by support.
Please note that depending on the nature of the inquiry and circumstances, we may not be able to respond immediately.

13. Changes to This Disclaimer

This disclaimer may be changed without prior notice.
Any significant changes will be notified on this page.
